Kay is the co-founder of Saddleback Church with her husband Rick Warren. She’s travelled the world helping fight HIV&AIDS and is the author of Say Yes to God and Choose Joy: Because Happiness Isn't Enough.
Following her son Matthew’s death in 2013, Kay talked of how her and her husband Rick’s "lives were turned completely upside-down." She spoke of how it called her to reassess, and see how her faith, marriage and ministry were affected by the tragedy.
She based her talk around Mark 8:34:
"Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me'."
Referencing her work around the globe, campaigning and advocating for those suffering from HIV&AIDS, she laid down a challenge to say "yes" to God.
She challenged those seated in the auditorium: "Are you a disciple or are you part of the crowd? Perhaps it’s time for you to step out of the crowd and truly become a disciple of God."
Drawing on personal experience Kay talked of how difficult it can be to trust God with every part of our lives, but called us to be "gloriously ruined" for God.
"How long has it been since [something] disturbed you enough that you said, 'I will take up a cross'?" she asked, urging us to be "courageously and dangerously surrendered" to God.
Through the talk she encouraged us all to step out of the crowd and become disciples and left with the final message that, "If you are a follower of God you have the privilege, the task and responsibility to make the invisible God visible."
